What 4 Days in Nature Taught Me About Health, Life & Letting Go

Living Proof

My Reflections from Portaging in Algonquin Park

By Dipa Chauhan

Recently, I spent 4 days and 3 nights deep in the heart of Algonquin Park, Ontario, off-grid, off-line, and off-the-clock. It was a portaging trip filled with rugged beauty, long canoe paddles, sore shoulders, and soul-deep quiet.  It was physically demanding, deeply restorative, and absolutely transformational.

And it reminded me of something we don’t talk about nearly enough when it comes to our health: Nature is not optional. It’s essential.

There’s even a Japanese word for it: Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. It’s the practice of immersing yourself in the forest—not with an agenda, but with presence. And what I experienced in Algonquin was just that: presence, stillness, and the undeniable wisdom of the wild.

The Nature Pyramid: A Forgotten Prescription for Wellness

We all know about the food pyramid (even if it's been revised over time), but have you ever heard of the Nature Pyramid?

Created by neuroscientist Rachel Hopman, Ph.D., the Nature Pyramid is a science-backed guide to help us reconnect to the rhythms that keep us grounded, resilient, and well.

It’s based on a 20:5:3 ratio:

  • 20 minutes in nature, 3x/week - a walk in the park, a stroll down a tree-lined street, or time in your backyard. This is enough to reduce stress and lower cortisol levels.

  • 5 hours/month in wilder nature - like a local forest, conservation area, or trail system. This is where Shinrin-yoku really begins.

  • 3 days/year fully unplugged in nature - the kind of deep reset most of us don’t even realize we need.

My trip to Algonquin? That was my 3-day dose. And what it gave me was far more than just a break from email.

What Nature Taught Me (That No Podcast or Book Ever Could)

Each morning and evening, we watched the sun rise and fall over the lake. We paddled upstream in the wind, laughed until our stomachs hurt, and sat in silence listening to loons call across the water.

Here are just a few lessons that floated up during those quiet, beautiful days:

  1. Go with the flow like water
Nature doesn't cling. It flows, it shifts, it lets go. And sometimes, the best thing we can do is follow suit, especially with habits, relationships, or thoughts that no longer serve us.

  2. Growth lives outside your comfort zone
Portaging isn’t a walk in the park, especially in strong winds or through mosquito-heavy woods. Paddling upstream and into headwinds pushed me mentally and physically. It reminded me of our strength when we surrender control. Every hard moment reminded me: we grow when things feel uncomfortable. Like the rocks in nature, strength is formed under pressure.

  3. We are more resilient than we think
Just like the trees that bend in storms but don’t break, we’re capable of weathering more than we give ourselves credit for.

  4. The simplest things are often the most profound
Watching the reflection of trees ripple on water, hearing birds in the early morning… these moments nourished me in a way no screen or supplement ever could.

  5. Relationships and connection are everything
The trip wouldn’t have meant as much without the people I shared it with. Family, friendship, shared meals, and belly laughs around the fire reminded me what really matters. This is one of life’s greatest gifts.

  6. Laughter is medicine
Even after long, exhausting portages, something as small as a silly joke or shared story had the power to reset our mood and energy completely.

  7. The teacher is in every moment
Nature teaches without saying a word. You just have to slow down and listen.

  8. Being > Doing
In our day-to-day lives, we’re always in motion. But in nature, it’s okay to simply be. That pause? It’s healing.

  9. Evolution requires uncertainty
The clouds change, the wind shifts, the trail bends. Being okay with the unknown is how we move forward, just like nature.

  10. "Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished." – Lao Tzu
It’s not about how fast you move, it’s about being in rhythm. And nature’s rhythm is slow, steady, and deeply effective.

  11. There is power in slowing down
The magic happens not when you do more, but when you do less. When you become more present. That’s where clarity lives. Sometimes doing less allows more of what matters to emerge.

Nature Is More Than a Backdrop. It’s a Healing Force.

Whether it’s 20 minutes in your neighborhood park or 3 days deep in the backcountry, nature resets your nervous system, brings clarity to your mind, and opens your heart.

So here’s my gentle nudge to you:

Start small. Walk under some trees. Sit in your backyard without your phone. Plan that weekend camping trip you’ve been putting off. Or maybe even go all in on a 3-day nature retreat.

And if your health journey feels stuck, chaotic, or confusing maybe what you need isn’t another “hack.”

Maybe it’s just time to go outside.

If you're ever considering a portaging adventure like this, I can’t recommend Driftwood Paddle Outfitters enough.
