The Biggest And Most Important Factor To Eating

I get so many patients come to my office with garbage bags full of supplements. They’re so concerned with what supplements to take and what to eat and what food they should avoid or not avoid that they often forget about the biggest and most important factor to eating. It’s how we eat.

In our clinic, we have a simple “5 C” approach to improving your digestion. We have witnessed it drastically improving digestion in patients without taking another supplement. The first of these five C’s is CHOOSE. Simply put, you want to make sure you choose the right foods for you. If you know there’s a certain food that bugs you, don’t choose that food again over and over.

The second C is CHEW. You want to make sure you chew your food very well. Only your mouth has teeth. A lot of individuals come to me taking tons of digestive supplements for one of the things they forget to do. By chewing your food appropriately, you can give your digestive system a break and a fighting chance to actually break down that food.

The third C is CHILL. You want to make sure that you’re very calm when you eat. If you’re eating and at the same time watching the news, or the next action drama, you’re going to be overstimulated. You’re going to send all the blood that’s supposed to stay in your trunk (digestive organs) to your arms and legs because you start executing a fight-or-flight response. If you don’t chill, that’s going to prevent you from breaking down food and it’s going to exacerbate digestive conditions. One thing you can do very simply to activate proper digestion is to take 5 to 10 belly breaths before eating your meal. Breath is a tool that can instantly activate the parasympathetic nervous system (think rest-or-digest nervous system).

The fourth C is CHERISH. We almost see food as a nuisance today. You get 30 minutes for lunch where you have to scramble away from your desk, walk to the restaurant, put the order in, wait for your food, and then scarf it down and be back at your desk. Imagine this – it’s the Stone Age and we are out in the wild getting very hungry. This is a time when there was no fast food restaurants available or convenience stores and our only option to eat would be find food. If you didn’t find any food, you simply went days without food. Let’s say you were four or five days without food and you walked into a clearing that had a ripe fruit tree on it. Immediately, you would probably have tears of gratitude in your eyes because you’re going to live another day and have the ability to replenish your body. You would also stay there as long as possible to just eat as much as you possibly could. Today we forget to completely cherish our food because our survival is never at risk. Make sure next time you do eat, feel extra grateful for all the effort that went into the food in front of you whether that’s the farmer making sure that food isn’t sprayed and it’s organic, to the transport for getting it out of season.

The big fifth C is to CHECK and this is two-fold. First and foremost, you do want to check your bowel movement every day. Your bowel movements contain vital information. For example, if you’re seeing undigested food in there, something is not working well – it might be one of those first four C’s. It could be something deeper than that going on. It all starts with checking your stool every day. You want to make sure you have healthy consistent bowel movements – the color, texture, consistency all play a big role. The second part of check is much deeper. You want to make sure that you test your stool regularly as well. We travel across the globe and we eat food from all over the world. For this reason, we very likely could pick up gut bugs at any given moment. A lot of us pick up these bugs and they may not cause you a problem today, but they have the potential to cause you a problem in the future. Most importantly, you want to make sure you check your stool with a functional stool test.

All of these factors are going to make a big, big difference in how you break down that food. If you’re someone who’s been suffering with digestive symptoms for a long time, make sure these five C’s are in place. If you feel something deeper is going on, make sure to evaluate your stool deeper with a trained practitioner.
