Is It Too Late To Help My Autistic Child?
One of the most prominent questions I get is, “is it too late to help my child?”
We’re under the impression that if our children didn’t reach a milestone, or if they didn’t have the brain “stay on track” with developmental connections, a lot of parents think it’s too late.
That’s actually not the case.
One of my older patients that I’ve had that’s been nonverbal and autistic started to speak and stop using a diaper at 19 years old.
Neuroplasticity or growing connections in the brain (one part of the brain can talk to another) can happen even later in life.
It is amazing!
Timing is key. We do want to get to these things sooner rather than later, but in my opinion, there’s still a lot that can be done, even if a child is older.
One of the things that I see in the autistic community is that these children are growing up, they don’t just stay young their whole lives. They’re getting to be nine, ten and even older, they’re teenagers, I have even had autistic patients in their 30s.
Even if your child might be all grown up, you can still really get a lot of these neuroplastic therapies to stick.
We want to understand why did the brain not make these connections when it should, reach milestones and develop further.
With the proper techniques and stimulation through a modality called functional neurology, you really can get the brain to grow the connections through proper stimulation (Once we know what areas of the brain are affected, and what’s the best way that we can get to them).
Think of the brain like a main road that is closed from point A to point B. We need to find a detour, we need to find another way to activate and develop that system and area of the brain.

For the last four years, he has served the Living Proof Institute as Clinical Director. After training hundreds of clinicians in functional medicine and functional neurology, a large part of his focus is to bring awareness to the healing potential of the human body metabolically through functional medicine and promoting neuroplasticity through functional neurology to help with the rising occurrences of chronic disease and providing solutions for complex health problems.
What are common health conditions that Dr. Seigler addresses using Functional Medicine?
Dr. Seigler has success in addressing neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune conditions, digestive complaints, as well as the adrenal, thyroid, and hormonal imbalances that are common in chronic diseases. By combining Functional Medicine and Functional Neurology, a personalized, long-term strategy can be developed to help maximize the healing process.
