How The Heck Can Healthy Food Make Somebody Feel Worse

Many of the patients that come to see us have worked with many practitioners, tried multiple supplements, and also multiple types of diets. One consistency in these patients is many feel worse when they try healthier diets. 

So how the heck can healthy food make somebody feel worse? We’re going to explore that very deeply today. One of the specific nutrients that patients with digestive issues have real trouble with is fiber. We have all heard of fiber but rarely is it ever demystified. We don’t really know what it is. 

To put it simply, fiber is something the human body does not digest. It’s a specific type of carbohydrate.It’s found in a lot of healthy foods, such as vegetables and fruits, and fiber is vital for our gut bacteria. This fiber is supposed to make it through our digestive tract completely undigested until it hits our bacteria. Our bacteria will then ferment this fiber to essentially feed themselves and increase gut diversity.  

The problem is that if your gut has too many other organisms or an imbalance of certain bugs, they may start to ferment that same fiber. Ironically the thing you need to make your gut healthier, you’re actually going to pay for as it’s going to increase gas, bloating, and affect bowel movements. Some individuals will feel backed up, some people get irritated and it does make them go to the bathroom more.

To get more specific on fiber, there are different subtypes of fiber. These are called FODMAPs. FODMAPs is an acronym that stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. 

All of these selectively feed different parts of our gut. What happens with individuals that have any sort of gut imbalance or overgrowth is they eventually develop FODMAP intolerance. Whereas FODMAPs are supposed to go in and feed our healthy bacteria, they’re just going to flare an individual up as it can feed the wrong set of organisms. 

Many patients that come to see me are already practicing a low fiber, low FODMAPs diets. This is a good short term intervention, especially if it provides relief but if you’re someone who’s been on a really restricted diet for too long, it can backfire. You may first feel better but by the end of it, you start to starve out your large intestine and your large intestine is where most of your microbial diversity resides. Once patients have starved out this vital area of the gastrointestinal tract, often patients will notice a lot of other symptoms: they become reactive to even more foods, gas and bloating takeover, and bowel movements are all over the place.  

If you’re someone who has tried multiple diets, you have to realize that diet is only one part of the equation. I always say that a diet can either fuel a fire or not fuel a fire, but it’s not necessarily enough to put the fire out completely. This is why you want to dig deeper and uncover the real reasons why you are reacting in a certain way. Only then can you continue to eat a healthy diet containing vegetables, fruits, and these higher fiber foods which are absolutely vital for us. 

The take-home point is you’re not what you eat, you’re what you and your gut eat and absorb.
